Cisco Launches 12 New Cert Specialties

3/15/2006 -- Today Cisco Systems announced 12 new Cisco Qualified Specialist certifications. While many of the titles are aimed at partners, a few also apply to general IT professionals.

The certifications are:

  • Cisco Advanced Wireless LAN Design Specialist
  • Cisco Advanced Wireless LAN Field Specialist
  • Cisco Advanced Wireless LAN Sales Specialist
  • Cisco Security Solutions and Design Specialist
  • Cisco Advanced Security Field Specialist
  • Cisco Security Sales Specialist
  • Cisco Routing and Switching Solutions Specialist
  • Cisco Routing and Switching Field Specialist
  • Cisco Routing and Switching Sales Specialist
  • Cisco Foundation Design Specialist
  • Cisco Foundation Field Specialist
  • Cisco Foundation Sales Specialist

According to the official annoucement on Cisco's Web site, the certifications were designed to "match job role requirements for Cisco Channel Partner employees in the new Channel program." More information about Cisco's partner program can be found here.

Like other Cisco Qualified Specialist titles, each of these certifications requires between one and four exams, and most also require a general Cisco title, such as the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), as a prequisite.

Exams for all of the specialities are now available at Pearson Vue and Prometric testing centers worldwide for $125 (U.S.).

Cisco launched its Qualified Specialist program in 2001. With these additions, the total number of Specialist designations the company offers is now 35.

3/15/06: Anonymous says: Along with the new certs there are a few exams being killed off to make room. Cisco Wireless LAN Support Specialist is Retiring July 27, 2006
3/16/06: Christopher Bell from Glossop U.K. says: This shows nothing more than a contemptuous grasp for money. I was wondering how long it would be before Cisco realised (like Microsoft has) that it is realtively easy to convince people of the value of certification. Once on that treadmill, you have a cash-cow for life.
3/16/06: Mike V from NJ says: It is no suprise. Certifiy, ask for big bucks and no nothing. Give me someone with real hands on experience! It is all about MONEY $$$
3/16/06: Robin from Florida says: "Once on that treadmill, you have a cash-cow for life." Especially since Cisco, unlike most others including Microsoft, makes you re-certify every three years...
3/18/06: Deatrice from SC says: Getting certified help my chances to get real hands-on experience. Most 4 year colleges are a wasted of time and money. You graduate with the hopes of earning good money but you have nothing to offer. Certification helps prepare you to get real hands-on experience before you actually get it.
3/20/06: T-Rock from Alaska says: Although it cost money to become certified, you also make money once you become certified and thats the bottom line. CISCO is a business first, and they also want to make sure companies that buy there product have a standard to hire employees, by way of Certs. Its always better to know the hands on, but the certs speak for you when you apply for the jobs so you get paid right away. Get yours and get paid!!
3/21/06: Anonymous from New York says: That's right! Obtaining your certification will definitely ensure you get paid, at least for Cisco, Microsoft is not as fortunate, when you have 10 million MCSEs compared to 20,000 CCIE of various specialties, ie. VOICE, SWITCHING, WIRELESS, etc.
3/21/06: MJ from Cali says: I agree with you on the hands on stuff 100%. I have 10 years of hands-on experience running Global Cisco networks and a few Cisco certs and I do it only for myself. The certs combined with true hands on experience is unbeatable for keeping your income in the 6 figure range.
3/22/06: ritesh mhatre from mumbai says: yaa even i suffered some time due to lack of certification so it is crucial to be certified.
3/31/06: Anonymous says: Cisco sucks
