LPI Raises Exam Fees to $150

3/22/2006 -- The Linux Professional Institute -- which for years has held fast to one of the lowest exam prices of all certification programs ($100 U.S.) -- recently announced that it has raised its exam prices to $150 (U.S.) each.

The new price for the non-profit's vendor-neutral linux certification exams is effective immediately.

"We have not adjusted our world price since we first began offering exams in 2000, despite rising costs," commented Jim Lacey, president and CEO of the non-profit LPI, in a statement released last week.

While the new price point is intended to serve as a global "benchmark" price, the organization said it will still allow some flexibility based on "regional variances." The organization has a history of offering discounted exams in countries where the U.S. exam fee is out of reach of most candidates.

LPI currently offers four exams: two for its Level I certification, and two for its Level II certification. All are available through Prometric and Pearson Vue testing centers worldwide.

3/22/06: Chip from Tennessee says: Doubling the price in one fell swoop seems more than a bit extreme. I could better understand a move to $125 or $150 per exam, and maybe even using a tiered approach with the Level II exams being priced at a premium. This will definitely effect my plans to pursue the LPI certification.
3/23/06: Adel from The Netherlands says: I'm from Holland (Europe). The new price in the US is still lower than the old price in Europe. Don't know the new price yet, but I can assure you it will not make me happy. Makes me wonder if I should alter my plans for this year. But on the other hand, the LPI deserves some support, so I'll probably drink that cup.
3/23/06: Becky Nagel from Editor, CertCities.com says: Hi Chip, actually, the new price is $150 per exam, which is up $50 (not double, which would be $200). Thought that was pretty clear above, but maybe not? Let me know -- Thanks -- Becky
3/24/06: Adel from The Netherlands says: Just realized something. 1. Those with LPIC-2 certifications desperately await the arrival of LPIC-3. 2. The first increase of the exam prices in 6 years. Do the math and we could be looking at the birth of LPIC-3 in the near future.
3/28/06: Anonymous says: Waste of time and money anyway really
3/28/06: Anonymous says: Chip - go back to year 2 my friend and learn simple arithmatic before trying to tackle any LPI certifications
3/29/06: Tcat Houser from Digital Nomad (Atlanta this week) says: ETA-I will have a Linux Cert in 2006. Same pricing structure as the other exams. LPI rollover acceptance Highly Likely! Linux plus a much lower chance of roll over acceptance. So if LPI works for you, look for a low cost roll over like CST and CNST.
