Parent Company Puts Prometric on Selling Block

11/15/2006 -- Last month, Thomson Corp. announced that it is looking to sell off assets in its Thomson Learning division, which includes the worldwide testing center network Prometric.

Prometric is one of two leading networks that deliver certification exams worldwide, including those for Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA and many others.

"Thomson Learning is an excellent business, but it does not fit with our long-term strategic vision," said Richard J. Harrington, president and chief executive officer of Thomson, in a released statement. Thomson is selling the assets as part of an overall restructuring.

The company has already found a buyer for one of its Learning units, NETg. Bidding for Prometric will open in January.

Prometric itself does not expect the sale process to affect the company's operations. "During the sale negotiations, Prometric is committed to ensuring that its relationships with clients and candidates remain its top priority," the company said in a statement posted on its Web site. "Prometric's management structure and people will remain unchanged, as will the high quality and range of products and services it provides."

According to media reports, the combined sale of all Thomson Learning assets could bring Thomson Corp. as much as $5 billion. -Becky Nagel

11/19/06: mrobinson52 says: I am just wondering if this also means they are going to discontinue the really poor series of books that are so popular with college instructors? The Thomson books are very second rate, and are over-priced too. They are popular with instructors because they come with built-in slide shows and test banks, so the instructors do not really have to know the material that well in order to present a class. If so, this is a very good move. I have also found that most testing sites I go to are both Vue and Prometric, so I think that from a practical standpoint, there is not likely to be much impact on us test takers.

12/4/06: Lauren says: I know the slide shows and test banks are a major selling point for lazy profs, but why second-rate?
12/10/06: Anonymous says: So will their employees lose their jobs. I like those guys :)
12/17/06: Anonymous says: I work for them and the company needs a lot of work, i.e. upper management make the same mistakes over and over...... As for job losses, that depends on the buyer...........
1/9/07: Andy C from London says: What does this mean for the CIW certification series? As a training agency here in the UK we still teach CIW series on occassion.
1/30/07: Anonymous says: I work for Thomson Prometric. "They" tell us it will be business as usual, and we should not see any noticable change....right...
2/8/07: Anonymous from ireland says: I work for Prometric as well and despite the promise of 'business as usual' one of the senior managers here has quit already, makes one wonder what he knows that the rest of us don't
3/9/07: Anonymous from South Africa says: I am currently working for Thomson Prometric over 10 years, and staying positive during the changes.
