Police Seize Assets of TestKiller.com

7/10/2002 -- On June 6 San Antonio police seized assets of TestKiller Ltd., the company that runs the practice exam Web site TestKiller.com.

According to a police report filed with the Bexar County, Texas District Court on June 20, the raid was prompted by Microsoft, who alleged that the site was selling Microsoft certification exam questions.

In his affidavit, seizing police officer Daniel Flaharty, a detective in the Special Crimes Unit of the San Antonio Police Department, wrote that he was contacted by a representative from the anti-piracy office of Microsoft. The unnamed representative alleged to Flaharty that TestKiller Ltd. was selling Microsoft "trade secrets" in the form of questions and answers to Microsoft exams.

According to the report, Flaharty began an investigation based on Microsoft's complaint, which led to the June 6 seizure of $408,566.84 in cash as well as several phones, printers, computer equipment, software and other items from at least one location.

No charges have been filed in this investigation. Calls made to the Bexar County district attorney's office to determine whether the investigation was ongoing were not returned as of press time.

Garry L. Neale, one of Testkiller Ltd.'s owners, politely declined CertCities.com's request for an interview, referring all questions to his attorney, who is out of the country this week.

A spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed that the company was aware of the investigation but said he could not comment on it due to the legal nature of the story.

The Testkiller.com Web site has been offline since early June.

Neale is the former owner of Troy Technologies (TroyTec.com), which in December settled a civil copyright and trademark infringement lawsuit brought by certification vendor CompTIA (see "CompTIA v. TroyTec Settled; Company Pulls CompTIA-Related Products from Site, Denies Wrongdoing").

CertCities.com will continue to follow this story and bring you further updates as they develop. -B.N.

7/10/02: Anonymous says: Us "purists" are against braindumps for good reason. They violate the Non-Disclosure Agreements and devalue the certification process. There are many other practice methods and places with documentation to read at than braindumps. IMO opinion anyone who needs to memorize actual test answers to pass regardless of their experience has simply proven to themselves and their peers that they can't hack actually earning that paper they espouse.
7/10/02: Anonymous says: You know, I'm glad Troy/Testkiller is finally down, but may I ask why your company has an ADD on this exact same page for a Known BRAINDUMP. UMM, I really dont see the point to this artice after seeing this page, It's truly a crying shame. You post this as if your excited about the fact that the site is down, Why, if your going to boast them yourself. I realize you are probably not boasting them persay, it's an add and your getting paid to put the add up, so does this make you a little on the hippocratical side or what. Just my 2 Cents

7/10/02: Mr MCT from California says: As a MCT in a quality school, and not a bootcamp, I can honestly say that I endorsed using some of the dump sites and heres why. Many of my students work hard, study hard and want to succeed. After jumping through all of the hoops from NT 3.51 to NT 4.0 to 2000, (and soon .Net), I think I would be remiss if I did not try to share my experiences with my students so they can learn properly and not waste time. Nothing helps more than using sample questions to help them think the new material through. It is one thing to regurgitate material from a book, it is another to use that material in a thoughtful matter and in real life. Those who seek shortcuts may pass one or two exams, but they never pass all of them. It's the nature of the beast. It is also no surprise that these people who choose shortcuts either can not find a job or they get exposed quickly for what they are and thus loose their job. There are no shortcuts in life. They always get weeded out one way or the other. Maybe if Microsoft would release samples of older retired questions or exams, people might not go elsewhere. Of course they could charge for them as nothing is ever free. Just my two cents.
7/10/02: DKid from California says: This is stupid. Microsoft is squeezing every penny out of every IT professional with outrageous prices for Microsoft courses that do teach you something, but not everything!!! They don't even prepare you enough for the test!!! They aren't even enough to pass the test!! If you don't know enough, you won't pass the test! anyway!! Reviewing Troytech will help you pass, but not the whole way. It gives you an idea what you're up against, it does not give you all the questions you'll encounter in your test!!!
7/10/02: Anonymous says: You are a dough head DKid. Have you seen a guide from Troytech? They usually contain every single question you will see word for word. They give you more than an idea of what you're up against, they tell you the exact questions you will see. Wake up.
7/10/02: MCT from Los Angeles says: EXAMSHEETS.NET & EXAMSHEETS.COM 2 sites to go to if you really want to pass these exams, these guys are Prometric Testing Center Administrators and they can get the actual "screenshots" of the pool of questions that you will need for the exam. I say who cares if you use troytechs or cheetsheets or any other materials to pass the exam, do what you have to do THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF GOOD PAYING JOBS OUT-THERE FOR IT'S Get your piece of that pie, even if you have to use EXAMSHEETS.NET OR EXAMSHEETS.COM
7/11/02: KARMA from all over the place says: i will get you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i will get you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i will get you all!!!!!and you better beleive it suckers!!!!!!!
7/11/02: Jclaude8 from Midwest says: Yes, yes; testkiller does more than prepare you for the exam. It might actually give you 60% of the questions. But, I will say this; the MOC and classes only would give you about 20% of the knowledge needed to pass these exams. Therefore, if testkiller and other "study" guides would reword and re-phrase their questions, I see nothing wrong with this study method. I don't like paying 8,000 dollars for an MCSE track and don't even get everything needed to study for the exams.! Microsoft needs to revamp its tracks or start allowing companies to prepare the public for the exams.
