LPI Planning Desktop Linux Cert

8/6/2003 -- The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) announced late today that is planning to launch a desktop certification.

"We are taking a community lead by calling for volunteers and others to step forward to help develop a Linux desktop certification program," LPI's president Evan Leibovitch said in a prepared statement announcing the new title. "The desktop is ready for primetime even in professional environments. It's not just a hacker's toy anymore. Companies and users are ready to teach and use it and we believe a certification program targeted to the desktop is going to help."

The organization did not put a time frame on the project. It is seeking support from the community as well as prospective partnerships to develop the title.

LPI currently offers a two-tiered Linux networking certification program, LPIC Level One and LPIC Level Two. Each consists of two proctored exams.

More information on LPI's certification program can be found at http://www.lpi.org/. -Becky Nagel

8/7/03: Anonymous says: Who uses Lixus for desktop business, get the market before you ask us to certify!
8/9/03: Anonymous says: A lot of places are starting to use linux on workstation's. Although I guess no one expects you to know that when you can't even spell it right.
8/10/03: Anonymous says: Wow,good comeback dude, please inform us lowly teckies where linux is being used? It is not on the federal level,or most fortune 500 companies. Before ANY MORE CERTS COME OUT PLEASE COMPANIES LOOK AT THE BUSINESS IMPACT. IF There is NO MARKET CREATE ONE BECAUSE A CERTIFICATION IS ONLY AS USEFUL AS THE MARKET DEMANDS! BUSINESS 101! BOY LPI you are really slow on the uptake!
8/11/03: Anonymous says: Go back to the unemployment line Windows Admin.
8/12/03: Anonymous says: Hey, I am employed because I follow the business need of my clients. If you do not fit the business needs of your clients you will be unemployed.
8/14/03: lowney from Montreal says: I find linux very appealing. I would be in the first ( few maybe) to be happy they give us a chance to certifie. I dislike stuburn people who only think of cert as a way to gain something, cert yourself if you want to be sure you know all the good stuff, be sure of your talent and then ask for a chance to have a desktop linux. True, linux is not realy present on desktop users, its in part because we cant all support them, linux being different from the other OS. Be sure that the wave will come or die. I'll be one to ride along side the best
8/15/03: onetreehill says: All of you who claim that fortune 500 companies are not using Linux are about as clueless as Wiley coyote on a Emu farm! I work for a fortune 500 Co and we are running Linux boxes for user data storage, etc. There are MANY fortune 500 Co's(burlington coat factory for one) ,etc that use Linux for a plethora of apps including NAS, DB servers, etc. I get so sick of you newbie GUI junkies that worship MS and think the only server platform has to cost 1000 bux for 10 client connections and have a start button. Get a life! Take the time to learn an Uber OS that was not created for ignorant end users but rather for REAL IT pro's and developers......'nough said!
8/18/03: Anonymous says: Once again my question who uses Linux for desktop enterprise solutions, not data storage,or webservers or print servers. Who...tell me I am already ertifed in linux been working with Linux since 91'. The question is still who!
8/18/03: Mark says: I know of several companies that use Linux on the desktop in programming....and I've heard that Siemens uses Desktop Linux Used linux since 91 eh? Side by side with Linus no doubt. Unfortunately, you never learned how to spell.
8/18/03: Slick says: Dood....91 eh. 0.12 was released in 92. You're full of shit.
