Redmond Magazine Announces Security Guru Russ Cooper as New Security Columnist

Irvine, CA, December 8, 2004 – Redmond magazine today announced it has signed on leading security expert Russ Cooper to spearhead its weekly Security Watch e-mail newsletter.

Cooper, one of the industry’s best-known and most-quoted security experts, is a senior scientist with security company TruSecure, and founder and editor of NTBugtraq, the seminal Microsoft Security-related mailing list.

Keith Ward, editor of Security Watch, said, “We’re ecstatic to have someone of Russ Cooper’s stature and knowledge as our new Security Watch columnist. Russ is highly influential in security circles, and the original content he’ll be providing Security Watch will help keep readers informed about threats their networks face.”

Security Watch reaches more than 57,000 dedicated readers each week. “This loyal group of readers deserves the best security advice. That is why we sought out Mr. Cooper, and were delighted when he agreed to write for us every week,” said Doug Barney, editor-in-chief of Redmond magazine.

Cooper, perhaps more than anyone, Barney said, is on top of critical Windows security issues and will alert Security Watch readers to critical exploits and vulnerabilities. “He’ll tell readers exactly how to protect their Windows networks from these problems,” Barney added.

“My Security Watch column is going to do an ‘around the horn’ approach to security,” Cooper said. “I'll cover issues that span the breadth of security—hacking to physical.”

Cooper has served in a multitude of IT roles, including administrator, developer and executive. He’s developed banking applications, accounting and forecasting tools for the oil industry, and performed countless integrations between Windows and other systems. He’s known for his unbiased look at Microsoft’s security efforts, a stance that has made him numerous friends, and adversaries, in Redmond.
