What Will It Take To Destroy the Microsoft Monopoly? Redmond Magazine Has the Answers

IRVINE, CA, March 7, 2006 --- In an exclusive report, Redmond magazine looks at just what it would take to eliminate the Microsoft desktop monopoly -- a market where Windows, Office and Internet Explorer all have more than 90 percent market share.

For its March cover story, "The 800-Pound Gorilla," Redmond magazine interviewed several dozen readers to find out just what it would take to get them to switch. As IT professionals with years of Microsoft experience, Redmond readers are the ones that will decide whether the software giant will keep or lose its dominant market share.

"IT executives are begging for alternatives to Microsoft software, but whether they would make the switch or not depends entirely on the strength of these rival technologies," says Redmond Editor in Chief Doug Barney, who wrote the story. "If Linux or the Mac are to unseat Microsoft, they'll have to exceed Windows and Office feature sets, integrate into existing environments, and prove they are in the game for the long haul."

Some cracks are already beginning to appear. Linux on the desktop and the Mac are inching their way into corporations, free and robust productivity suites like OpenOffice are gaining enterprise adherents, and alterative browsers such as Firefox are taking a serious run at IE.

The biggest challenges are yet come: Microsoft has to convince its installed base to move to the next generation of Windows, called Vista, and as such it has to be reliable, secure, and easy to learn. The next version of Office, with a brand new interface, will be just as disruptive.
