Modifying Port Number for a MOSS Site

How can I change the port number of a Web application hosted on a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007?

7/15/2009 -- In MOSS 2007, there's usually more than one way to perform a specific task. Some tasks can be performed using either the user interface or the command-line tool STSADM.EXE, while others can be performed only with the STSADM.EXE tool. If you don't want to delete and recreate a Web application, you can use the following method to change the port number of an existing one.

Let's assume that you have a Web application (Web site) called WEBAPP1 that's running on port 1234. You want to host the Web site on port no. 5678 instead. First, create a new Web application -- let's call it WEBAPP2 -- that will use port 5678.

Extend WEBAPP1 using port 1234 without any host headers to WEBAPP2 using port 5678 with a host header. Delete the old WEBAPP1 using SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration site. You should now be able to use the new Web application (WEBAPP2) with the new port number (5678).

If you're using ISA Server to publish the Web site, you'll need to update your ISA Server rule accordingly to accommodate the new port number.
