PDI+ Being Encouraged by Printing Manufacturers

According to CompTIA, the PDI+ certification -- focused on printing and document imaging devices -- is now being encouraged for technicians by the following manufacturers: Brother, Canon, Consumer Imaging Group, HP, Lexmark, Sharp, Panasonic and Xerox. As with all CompTIA certification, PDI+ is vendor-neutral and is recommended for entry-level technicians that have some hands-on experience as well as "foundation-level knowledge" of these devices.

The exam consists of 85 questions that must be answered in 90 minutes with a passing score of 675 (on a scale of 100-900). The eight domains, and their weighting, are as follows:

• Print Engine Process and Components (21 percent)
• Scan Process and Components (10 percent)
• General Troubleshooting (23 percent)
• Basic Electromechanical Components and Tools (13 percent)
• Connectivity (11 percent)
• Color Theory (8 percent)
• Professionalism and Communication (8 percent)
• Safety and Environment (6 percent)

Book of the Week: Cyber War

If you want a book to make you think, Cyber War by Richard A. Clarke is it. While there is no shortage of doom-and-gloom "there is no such thing as security" titles, the mere fact that this one is written by the National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection and Counterterrorism alone makes this stand out from the others.

There truly isn't any time wasted on ancient history in this book -- it starts around the time of Estonia's Bronze Night conflict (April of 2007), goes through the cyber attacks between Russia and Georgia when that took place and covers events as recent as Google's issues with the Chinese hackers. Every event is explored in a depth you've likely not seen it addressed before. 

While the book offers a great history lesson on attacks from days gone by, don't make the mistake of believing it stops there. Rather, this title's eight chapters take a sort of past-present-future approach and outline as well what needs to be done to move from cyber war to cyber peace. Whether you are a security administrator or just someone who loves reading a solid book on a current topic that makes the news regularly, you'll find Cyber War to be one you'll be glad you perused.
